Subject: DOS Disk Controller For CDC Wren III
Date: August 2, 1990

QUESTION: Does anyone out there know of a good disk controller that
would allow me to use Novell's CDC WREN III drives and have
it boot DOS? Has anyone had any experience with the WD7000
fast controller?
ANSWER: The Adaptec 1540 is probably the most commonly used SCSI
controller, which will boot DOS (due to the fact that has
its own BIOS on board). It will support Wren drives with
no problem. It can be used for duplexing in any channel
setting from 0 to 4, and also performs multi-threaded IO
through use of the SCSI disconnect feature, giving higher
throughput than the DCB. Its only limitation is that it
will not work with 16-bit LAN cards which use DMA, such as
the 3C505 and NP600. So use the NE2000 instead.
You need to be careful with the BIOS version on the WD7000
FAST controller, or you will find COMPSURF failing.
